Pastoralists & Indigenous Peoples

Standard v0.1 for Consultation

Listening to people who live and work on rangelands

Rangelands support the lives, cultures and livelihoods of pastoral families around the world. They are shaped by seasons, movement and the deep relationship between people, livestock and nature.

The RSC Standard (previously the Global Rangelands Standard, GRS) is being developed to recognise good stewardship, support pastoral livelihoods, and improve understanding of pastoral systems.

This work builds on ongoing conversations and engagement with pastoralists, Indigenous Peoples and others. We are now continuing that process by listening to people’s experiences and perspectives on the ground.

Why your input matters

People who live and work on rangelands are the experts in their own landscapes.

We want to understand:

  • What good rangeland stewardship looks like in your context
  • How land, animals and resources are managed in practice
  • What challenges you are facing
  • What support is needed
  • What should be recognised and valued

Your knowledge and experience will help shape how the RSC Standard develops.

How you can take part

Most discussions will take place through local workshops or community meetings, organised with partner organisations.

In these conversations, you might be asked about:

  • The land and how it has changed over time
  • What healthy land looks like
  • How you manage grazing and animals
  • What challenges you face
  • What support would help
  • What you would like others to better understand about your work

There are no right or wrong answers – we’re interested in your own knowledge and experience.

About the  RSC Standard

The RSC Standard is being designed to describe what good rangeland stewardship looks like across different countries and systems.

It focuses on the outcomes we want to see:

  • Healthy land
  • Well-cared-for animals
  • Strong and resilient livelihoods
  • Fair and inclusive decision-making

It is not about telling people exactly how to manage their land. It is about recognising and supporting good practices, while allowing for different ways of working in different places.

Consultation materials

These materials are designed to support discussion and reflection.

Key questions

  • Does this reflect how you manage your land and animals?
  • What feels unrealistic or unfair?
  • What is missing?
  • What would be difficult to put into practice?
  • What would help make this workable in your context?

How to share your feedback

Feedback will be gathered through:

  • Facilitated workshops
  • Group discussions
  • Notes captured by facilitators
